CISOs at startups and AI-security companies: how new-CISO announcements frame the role

Press releases from Kai, EigenQ and Datavault AI show how young security and AI firms describe a new CISO's remit, background and link to the product.

Three announcements, three framings

Three company announcements in this set cover CISO appointments at young or fast-scaling firms: Kai on March 19, 2026, Datavault AI on July 16, 2026, and EigenQ on July 28, 2026. All three are company-issued press releases, so they show what each firm chooses to emphasize. They share a pattern. The CISO's job is tied to the company's own product, and the person's background is presented as proof they fit that product.

The three companies describe themselves in different terms. Kai calls itself the company behind the first agentic AI cybersecurity platform designed to execute security work end-to-end at machine speed. The sections below take each release in turn.

Kai: the CISO as internal operator of the product

Kai's release states that Alfredo Hickman will oversee the security of Kai's systems and data while strengthening customer trust as the company scales. That is a conventional remit. The release then adds a product-facing duty. It says he will operate Kai's agentic AI platform within the company's own environment, helping shape, stress-test, and mature it.

The background section leans on experience building security functions from scratch. The release says Hickman brings nearly 20 years of cybersecurity leadership experience spanning the private sector, national security, and military service. It names his CISO role at Obsidian Security, where, according to the release, he helped build the company's security organization from day zero. It also credits him with leading security product engineering at Rackspace Managed Security, where he helped build a global managed security services business.

Kai's CEO, Galina Antova, is quoted describing Hickman as representing the next generation of security leadership, which she calls deeply technical, mission-driven, and unafraid to rethink assumptions. The framing is a hire who has built security programs and who can also act as an early, demanding user of the company's own technology.

EigenQ: a promotion into a created CISO role

EigenQ's release differs in structure. It pairs the CISO news with a Vice Chairman appointment, and it presents the CISO as an internal promotion rather than an outside hire. The company says it promoted Alexander Truskovsky to the newly established position of CISO, following his tenure as Vice President of Cryptography.

The company describes itself as a quantum technology company developing hardware and software spanning post-quantum cryptography, quantum random number generation, and hardware-rooted quantum-safe infrastructure. A CISO inside that kind of company sits close to the cryptography the firm sells.

The release spells out the remit in standard CISO terms. It says Truskovsky will lead information security strategy, cybersecurity governance, security architecture and risk management. It then extends the role into product work. He will also continue to provide strategic input on product design, product security, customer requirements, and product-market fit.

The release also places the appointments in a corporate setting. It says they come ahead of the proposed merger with Silicon Valley Acquisition Corp. The release does not explain how that merger bears on the CISO's duties.

Truskovsky's background is described in technical terms. The release calls him an accomplished inventor, cryptography leader, and enterprise solutions architect. In his own quoted words, he commits to ensuring security remains at the core of every product the company delivers. EigenQ's CEO, José Rosas-Bustos, frames the executive team as a group of founders and builders. He says every member has previously built successful companies or technologies.

Datavault AI: security tied to quantum-resistant work

Datavault AI's release, issued through Business Wire, announces Dr. Barry Childe as CISO. The remit combines governance language with technology themes. The company says Childe will lead its cybersecurity strategy and strengthen data protection across the platforms that support tokenization, valuation and secure data monetization.

The release goes further and describes a mandate. It says his mandate centers on protecting critical data, advancing secure infrastructure and driving the Company's work in AI security and quantum-resistant technologies. In this case the CISO is expected to push a technology agenda as well as protect the company.

The background is long and spans several fields. The company says Childe brings more than 40 years of experience across cybersecurity, high-performance computing, cloud infrastructure and distributed-ledger technology. It cites a Distinguished Engineer post at HSBC, where he led the bank's blockchain and innovation initiatives.

What the three have in common

Reading the releases side by side, a few patterns stand out.

  • The remit has two halves. Each release names a conventional duty: protecting the company's systems and data, or leading strategy and governance. Each then adds a duty tied to the company's product, whether that is operating the platform, advising on product design, or driving AI security and quantum-resistant work.
  • Product proximity shapes the background. Kai points to security-company roles and building a security organization from nothing. EigenQ points to cryptography and invention. Datavault AI points to decades across engineering, banking and quantum encryption.
  • The announcements are about the story. The quotes from the CEOs and the CISOs speak about the company's mission and market. None of the three releases gives a reporting line, a team size or a budget for the role.

What the releases do not say

The documents leave several questions open. None of them says to whom the CISO reports. None describes the size of the security team or how success will be measured. EigenQ's release describes the CISO position as newly established and gives the duties, but it does not say how those duties were handled before. Kai's release describes the CISO as an operator of the company's platform inside its own environment, but it does not describe what that work involves day to day.

For a security leader comparing paths to the top seat, the main point is limited to what these releases support. At these companies, the announcement of a CISO leads with product, mission and credentials, and the operating details of the role are left out.
