Fredrick Lee is the Chief Information Security Officer of Reddit, appointed in July 2023. He reports to Reddit's Chief Technology Officer, Chris Slowe.

Career path

Lee began his career at a number of dot-com era startups before joining Bank of America, where he worked on enterprise systems. After identifying vulnerabilities there, he joined one of the company's first application security programs, which became his full-time role. He later worked at Fortify during what he has described as the early days of application security as a discipline, and at NetSuite. Lee has said his time at Twilio reshaped how he viewed the practice of security inside companies. "Twilio really shifted the way I thought about how security should be practiced inside of companies," Lee said.

Lee went on to serve as Chief Security Officer at Square. He then became Chief Security Officer and Head of IT at Gusto, a role he held from 2019. Reddit named Lee as its Chief Information Security Officer on July 31, 2023, citing more than 20 years of experience leading information security and privacy efforts at financial services companies and technology startups. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Remit at Reddit

At Reddit, Lee oversees the Privacy and Security teams, which are responsible for identifying and mitigating risks around information security, privacy, and compliance. In his first year in the role, he shifted the organization's focus toward security engineering, pushing the team to discuss how to build security pipelines rather than only reporting on incidents. A continuing priority for Lee is ensuring that user-generated content on the platform is authentic, including efforts to help users know they are interacting with real people rather than bots.

Public appearances

Lee is listed as Reddit's CISO on the speaker page for the Black Hat USA 2024 Innovators & Investors Summit. He also maintains a public profile with RSA Conference, where his biography describes his background at Square and Gusto before Reddit.
