As of January 2024, Gregory Thompson Jr. serves as the inaugural Chief Information Security Officer of Vantage Data Centers, a role he was appointed to in August 2023.
Career path
Thompson has worked at Vantage Data Centers since 2019.
Before joining Vantage, he was a security manager at General Dynamics Corporation, where he oversaw organizational security efforts for more than 400 employees.
Earlier in his career he held several roles at the FBI, including acting associate chief security officer, where he worked on risk reduction through enhanced security measures and risk assessments.
At Vantage, he served as global vice president of physical security and cybersecurity before moving into the CISO role.
In August 2023, Vantage named Thompson to its global leadership team as the company's first chief information security officer, a newly created position.
A company update covering Vantage's 2023 growth, including a $10 billion capital raise and new leadership appointments, confirmed Thompson's naming as inaugural CISO among that year's changes.
Remit and public statements
In the CISO role, Thompson leads the strategy to strengthen Vantage's cybersecurity posture as the company scales internationally, including building a model for security threat responses, creating business continuity plans, and developing and maintaining a security architecture portfolio across the company's data center campuses.
"This is a volatile time in the cybersecurity space as organizations across multiple industries face cyber events each day," Thompson said.
Recognition
Thompson's security work has been recognized with a place on Security Systems News' 40 under 40 list in 2020 and the Northern Virginia Technology Council's Next Generation Leader award in 2021.
