As of November 2024, Jared Bartel was the Chief Information Security Officer of Idaho State University, a newly created position making him the institution's first CISO.

Career path

Before moving into the CISO role, Bartel served as Associate CIO of Infrastructure Services at the Pocatello, Idaho-based university.

In that position he expanded the cybersecurity department, added critical technologies that decreased campus vulnerabilities, and developed centralized logging processes to ensure compliance and reduce incident resolution times.

The university ran an open search for the new Chief Information Security Officer position, which included public forums for candidates.

Bartel took part in one such open forum, held on Monday, October 7, 2024, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in person at the Eli M. Oboler Library, room B-07.

Idaho State University announced on November 4, 2024, that after an extensive search Bartel had been named to the Chief Information Security Officer role, with the organizational change taking effect November 10, 2024.

Remit

In the CISO role, Bartel is responsible for managing Security and Research Computing.

His appointment also prompted related changes within IT Services: Kathy Hoffman was named interim Director of Infrastructure Services, with oversight of ISOS, Network Engineering, and Network Operations, while Chris Olsen took on an interim Senior Engineer role overseeing the Network Technicians team and its work.

Leadership approach

The university described Bartel's leadership philosophy as centered on building strong relationships, which it said would serve him and the institution well as its first Chief Information Security Officer.

Industry coverage of the appointment also noted his prior title and employer, listing him among cybersecurity leaders named to new positions during that week.
