Marshall Erwin is the Chief Information Security Officer of Fastly, Inc., appointed in July 2023.
Career path
Erwin began his career in the intelligence community, where he worked for five years as a counterterrorism and cybersecurity analyst.
He then served as the counterterrorism and intelligence adviser to Senator Susan Collins on the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, helping lead the committee's investigation into the terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
He later worked as an intelligence specialist at the Congressional Research Service, focusing on National Security Agency surveillance leaks and legislative changes to the FISA statute.
Erwin also held positions as a Research Fellow at Stanford University and a non-residential Fellow at Stanford's Center for Internet and Society.
At Mozilla he worked as senior director of Trust and Security before being named Chief Security Officer, where he focused on data security, privacy, and surveillance.
Fastly announced his hire as Chief Information Security Officer on July 31, 2023, alongside new appointments of a Chief Marketing Officer and a promotion to General Counsel.
Securing Fastly's platform and public talks
As CISO, Erwin brings security operations, product development, and trust and privacy experience to Fastly's work on making online experiences safer. He has appeared on Fastly's Xcelerate London agenda alongside other security leaders for a session titled Challenges and best practices for securing the AI infrastructure.
Published commentary
Erwin has written for Security Magazine, including a piece on bot impersonation titled Organizations Think They Know Who's Visiting Their Sites, published June 12, 2026. While at Mozilla, Erwin spoke publicly on digital privacy issues, including contact-tracing technology, saying, "People need to be confident that the software on their phones is behaving as advertised," Marshall Erwin, senior director of Trust & Security.
