As of February 2025, Ryan Gurney is the Chief Information Security Officer of LVT (LiveView Technologies), a role announced on February 6, 2025.
Career path
Gurney began his security career in leadership roles at PwC, eBay and Engine Yard.
He then served as Vice President of Information Security at Zendesk, where he led all of the company's security functions and played a part in its initial public offering.
Gurney moved to Looker, a business intelligence and big data analytics platform, as Chief Security Officer, leading security and compliance before and after Google's $2.6 billion acquisition of the company in 2020.
In June 2021 he joined YL Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on Israeli cybersecurity startups, as its first full-time CISO-in-Residence, after several years on the firm's Venture Advisory Board.
By the time he joined full-time, colleagues at YL Ventures said Gurney had accumulated fifteen years of experience as a security practitioner across multiple security disciplines, including building security programs from scratch and scaling startups.
In February 2025, LVT named Gurney Chief Information Security Officer to lead its information security team and strengthen the company's data security practices and regulatory compliance as it entered its 20th year in business.
Advising cybersecurity startups
At YL Ventures, Gurney worked directly with entrepreneurs before and after investment, supporting their product ideation, validating value propositions and refining go-to-market strategy for the firm's portfolio companies.
He also assisted the firm's due diligence process and worked to remove communication roadblocks between portfolio companies and their customers.
He described his focus on helping founders understand buyer behavior: "I am most excited to bring my insight into what buyers look for in a security product and vendor relationship, as well as help founders tackle CISO and security management pain points," he said.
YL Ventures, where Gurney advised founders, has counted portfolio companies later acquired by firms including Palo Alto Networks, Microsoft and Proofpoint among its successes.
Published commentary
Gurney has written on security leadership for Dark Reading, including the piece The Shifting Role of the CISO, published in November 2022.
