Career path

Putnam is a founding partner of New Charter Technologies and previously served as president of the managed security service providers Cyber74 and Digital Umbrella. He also served as president of Apex Technology Management, an IT managed services provider that became part of New Charter's network of partner companies.
At the June 2022 launch of Cyber74 as a national cybersecurity firm under New Charter, Putnam spoke as the company's president about building a comprehensive security program covering people, process and technology for small and mid-sized businesses. CSO Online reported New Charter's appointment of Putnam as chief information security officer in its roundup of May 2023 CISO moves. He is described as a 30-year veteran of the IT and cybersecurity industry and as co-author of Cyber SWAT: Hackers are only part of the problem. By July 2024, Putnam held the combined title of CIO and CISO at New Charter Technologies.

Focus on AI, compliance and healthcare security

Putnam has written about how artificial intelligence can help organizations flag potential compliance issues before they escalate, including by scanning unstructured clinical data such as notes and reports. He said, “AI-driven solutions empower us to proactively identify and mitigate security threats while maintaining strict adherence to compliance standards, thereby safeguarding patient data and enhancing trust in our healthcare services.” Putnam has also discussed applying zero trust principles and least-access privileges through AI-enabled, just-in-time access controls, and described AI's role in monitoring Internet of Medical Things devices for vulnerabilities and suspicious activity. He has noted that AI can help compliance officers keep pace with multiplying regulatory requirements and reduce the data-entry burden on healthcare providers while keeping records more secure.
