While serving as Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at Duff & Phelps in 2020, Dunn wrote about shadow IT for Infosecurity Magazine, describing it as a blind spot that exposes organizations to unknown risk. Earlier in his career he spent 13 years on the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force and received the Secret Service Forensic Examiner of the Year award three times.
He was lead investigator on an international stolen credit card scheme worth millions of dollars, work later featured on the Darknet Diaries podcast. Dunn is also a 19-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department and was named its Detective of the Year in 2012.
Kroll appointed him Chief Information Security Officer in March 2023.

Dunn's work also supports Kroll's cybersecurity, data forensics and investigations services for clients. He ensures Kroll's security leadership worldwide while monitoring threats and coordinating incident response. Kroll President Shai Waisman said, "David brings to his role over 25 years of experience in both public and private sector security that includes incident response, threat intelligence and research, electronic crimes and law enforcement."
