Shane Barney is Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Keeper Security, appointed in May 2025. He joined the privileged access management provider from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), where he had served as the agency's CISO.
Career path
Barney began his career at USCIS in the Office of Security and Integrity, first working with the agency as a federal security contractor before becoming a federal employee. In that early role he helped stand up the agency's national operations center and build DHS's first classified system, while working with the intelligence and law enforcement communities on national security efforts. In 2014 he moved to the USCIS Office of Information Technology as Chief of Cyber Intelligence, where he established the agency's first threat intelligence and insider threat programs. He was promoted to Deputy CISO in 2016 and named CISO of USCIS in 2018, a tenure that spanned roughly eleven years at the agency and six years at the CISO level, within a total of twenty years at the Department of Homeland Security. As CISO, he led initiatives in identity security and risk intelligence, and under his leadership USCIS became the first federal agency to achieve 100% single-sign-on across all systems, alongside role-based access deployment, centralized secrets management and automated certificate lifecycle management. In 2023 he received the DHS Secretary's Meritorious Service Silver Medal Award for transitioning the agency's cyber defenses from reactive to proactive, work the department said produced a $17 million return on investment in saved labor hours in a single year. In 2024 he was named an H2O AI Top 100 AI Thought Leader. He joined Keeper Security as CISO in May 2025.
Public talks and remit
At Keeper, Barney leads efforts to advance the company's cybersecurity strategy and protect customer data, and has discussed Keeper AI's use of generative AI to analyze session recordings and strengthen privilege management, as well as the need for agencies to prepare for quantum-computing threats through crypto-agile systems. While at USCIS he spoke publicly on zero-trust implementation and on how AI and automation were strengthening the agency's cyber resilience. He holds a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from the University of Vermont.
"As the new CISO at Keeper Security, I am excited to lead our efforts in enhancing cybersecurity strategies and protecting our clients' critical data," said Shane Barney.
