Career path
Smeaton has held CISO positions since 2006, beginning with roles at The Saudi Investment Bank and MIB Group.
He later served as Chief Information Security Officer of DataRobot, where he built and led the company's global security team.
In 2022 he joined Afiniti as Chief Information Security Officer, a role in which he was responsible for maintaining and maturing the company's information security program.
In June 2024, Merlin Ventures appointed Smeaton as its CISO-in-Residence, a role in which he provided strategic and technical counsel to the firm's portfolio companies and worked to expand its community of security executives.

Jamf announced Smeaton's appointment as CISO on September 26, 2024, alongside the hire of Marc Botham as Global Vice President of Channel and Alliances.
In the Jamf role, Smeaton leads a global team of information security professionals and is responsible for shaping the company's information security vision and championing its security platform in the market.
Remit and recognition
Smeaton's background spans more than 25 years of information security work across Europe, North America, and the Middle East, including banking, healthcare, insurance, and technology organizations.
He holds the CISSP, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CCISO, and CRISC certifications, and his areas of expertise include security risk management, regulatory compliance, cloud security, and program development.
He was recognized with the (ISC)² CEO Award, also described as the (ISC)² Global Achievement CEO Award, in 2022.

Smeaton spoke on Cyber Risk Management from a CISO's Perspective at an ISC2 event on October 25, 2023.
