As of October 2024, Dane Stuckey is co-chief information security officer at OpenAI, a role he took on alongside Matt Knight.

Career path

Before joining Palantir full time, Stuckey spent more than ten years working across commercial, government, and intelligence community roles in digital forensics, incident detection and response, and security program development.

He holds a Bachelor's of Infrastructure Assurance, with an emphasis on Digital Forensics, from the University of Texas, San Antonio.

Stuckey joined Palantir in 2014 on the information security team as a detection engineering and incident response lead.

He went on to serve as Palantir's Chief Information Security Officer, a position he held for more than six years as part of over a decade in senior security roles at the company.

As CISO, he led a team of security engineers and continued to go on call personally to investigate and respond to threats against the company.

In 2019 he was named a founding member of CNBC's Technology Executive Council.

In October 2024, Stuckey left Palantir to join OpenAI as co-chief information security officer, sharing the role with Matt Knight, who had been promoted to head of security at OpenAI the previous month.

Announcing the move, Stuckey said, "Security is germane to OpenAI's mission."

He said meeting high standards for compliance, trust, and security was necessary to protect the hundreds of millions of users of the company's products, to let democratic institutions benefit from these technologies, and to support development of safe AGI.

Talks and remit

In May 2022, while CISO at Palantir, Stuckey co-presented a talk at Stanford's Applied Cyber program with Palantir detection and response engineer Chris Long, covering the organizational theory, operational challenges, detection engineering philosophy, telemetry, orchestration, and automation involved in building and running a blue team at a technology company.

The session also included a defense-oriented question-and-answer segment with both speakers.

At OpenAI, Stuckey's arrival came alongside the addition of retired General Paul Nakasone, the former director of the National Security Agency, to the company's board, where OpenAI has said Nakasone would contribute to understanding how AI can strengthen cybersecurity by detecting and responding to threats.
