Ian Thornton-Trump is the Chief Information Security Officer of Inversion6, appointed in November 2024.
Career path
From 1989 to 1992 Thornton-Trump served with the Canadian Forces Military Intelligence Branch.
He rejoined the Canadian Forces Military Police Reserves in 2002 and retired as a Public Affairs Officer in 2013.
He also served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst.
After his public-service career he worked as a cybersecurity analyst and consultant across multinational insurance, banking and healthcare organisations.
He went on to serve as Chief Information Security Officer for Cyjax Ltd., a UK-based threat intelligence provider, while also holding the Chief Technical Officer role at Octopi Managed Services Inc. in Canada.
In November 2024 Inversion6, a division of managed services provider TRG, named him Chief Information Security Officer as its first UK hire, tasked with expanding the company's model into the UK and EU markets.
In that role he provides fractional CISO services and cybersecurity solutions tailored to the UK and EU markets.
He is a member of the CyberEdBoard.
Public commentary and published work
Speaking to Information Security Media Group at Infosecurity Europe 2025, Thornton-Trump discussed identity access management and help desk gaps exposed by attacks on retailers including Marks & Spencer and Co-op. He said the incidents were "a massive wake-up call to a sector of the industry that has been under-appreciated when it came to cyber risk." He advised organisations to adopt one-time administrative access policies, restrict lateral movement within networks and deploy artificial intelligence-enhanced detection capabilities. He has written for Infosecurity Magazine, including the opinion piece Banning Ransomware Payments Will Do More Harm Than Good and the blog post Strategic Intelligence Guidance for Adopting AI Models in Your Organization. In 2021 he appeared on Security Magazine's Cybersecurity and Geopolitical Podcast to discuss the International Cyber Expo in London and the business case CISOs must build when seeking security budget increases.
