As of June 2024, Jason Lee is the Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer of Splunk.
Career path
Lee spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he held senior leadership roles including Principal Director of Security Engineering for the Windows and Devices division and Senior Director of Developer Services, in which he oversaw the design and management of the company's mission-critical public key infrastructure.
From September 2017 to June 2020, he served as Senior Vice President of Security Operations at Salesforce, leading a team of more than 300 security professionals across network and system security, incident response, threat intelligence, data protection, vulnerability management, intrusion detection, identity and access management, and offensive security.
Zoom hired Lee as its Chief Information Security Officer beginning June 29, 2020, with Lee reporting to Chief Operating Officer Aparna Bawa.
Splunk appointed Lee as Chief Information Security Officer effective immediately on September 6, 2022, giving him oversight of cloud and application security, operations, threat management, penetration testing, risk, and customer trust.
Lee holds a B.A. from Washington State University.
Remit and public commentary
Lee has described part of his role as demonstrating to customers how Splunk uses its own security products to protect its own infrastructure.
"One of the unique parts of the job is as a CISO for a security company that has security products," he said, describing how Splunk showcases its own product use to customers.
Following Cisco's acquisition of Splunk, Lee's team has worked on integration projects to give Splunk staff access to Cisco's networks and environments.
Discussing threat trends, Lee pointed to data showing that 53% of a reported 400 billion dollars in annual losses among the Global 2000 stemmed from security incidents, with human error cited as the leading cause.
He has also said that AI-driven phishing is making it more important to keep employees aware of evolving threats, since human error in opening unsafe emails remains a direct route for ransomware to enter an environment.
Lee co-authored the article A New Era for CISOs: Navigating Regulations and Unprecedented Threats with Deneen DeFiore, published in April 2024.
